Being of the pop phenomenon that started the new wave of Pop Culture
around the World, Melanie C aka Sporty Spice has many fans world wide.
Her solo music is a distant cry from the pop music she helped create
with the Spice Girls, but the sincerity behind the music has helped Miss
Chisholm win hearts over several times. Melanie C goes by many different nicknames. In the beginning of her career she was the Spice Girl who was more interested in working out than looking pretty...even though she was always the prettiest of them all with her highly natural crystal clear skin and bold yet feminine features. Because of her "tomboy" appearance Smash Hits, a UK magazine, nicknamed her Sporty Spice. She took in the name. For the next three years Melanie C would only be seen wearing track shoes and windbreaker pants. Thus Melanie C took on the nicknames of Mel C or Sporty Spice. After two years of heavely promoting their group albums, the Spice Girls took a break. They had lost one member to solo stardom, and in their hearts the girls dreamed on one day making it big as solo stars aswell. After the Spiceworld tour which sold out many arenas worldwide, Melanie C's partners in crime took a break from the music industry. But Melanie C did not want to dissappoint fans. She continued to push the girls into recording their third album, the first without Geri. The girls did release their first single as a quartet that year, and they got another Christmas numbe one, but with Melanie B and Victoria's pregnancy and wedding plans the wish of recording the third Spice Girls album were quicjly erased. Melanie C packed up her bags and spent the next 6 months locked up in a studio in LA where she finished her solo album which she had begun in 98 following the success of her duet with Bryan Adams titled "When You're Gone". "Northern Star" was a highly anticipated solo album. Geri Halliwell had already released her solo album in June of 99, but critics expected Melanie C to blow Geri out of the water with her album, after all Melanie C was always called the Talented Spice. The first track off "Northern Star" was heard in the smash hit movie "Big Daddy". The song was called "Ga Ga". It was rock, and was not what was anticipated from a pop princess. But the song received a lot of requests from radios in England and elsewhere. Among the reviews of the soundtrack, "Ga Ga" was always mentioned as one of the better tracks on the album....yet not too many people knew who Melanie C was. For the last three years Melanie C had been Sporty, and not too many people knew that her real name was Melanie C. "Northern Star" was a slow moving album at first. It was not received too well at first. Negative comments from critics who thought Melanie C's rock songs were inappropriate for a pop artist injured the sales of the album. But with the release of her third single intitled "Never Be The Same Again", Melanie C let the world know that her album was not just about rock. The album was a collection of the sounds that have made the last decade. From that point on Melanie C's "Northern Star" picked up on record sales. Her album resurfaced in the pop charts and remained in the top 10 for a little over a year! The album peaked at number 4...it had entered the charts at number 10 in Oct 99 and by December of 00 it had moved down into the top 20. By November 2000 all the issued albums had been sold and Virgin re-issued another batch of "Northern Star" albums, this time including two remixes on the album. By late 2000 the album had already gone gold in several countries and double platinum in the UK. In 2002 "Northern Star" resurface on the album charts in January, three years after it's release! The album continues to sell well. It holds a triple platinum position in the UK alone(a the time of this report in Jan 2002). In early 2001 "I Turn To You" was finally released in the United States. The song had already topped the charts world-wide. But this track was the first Melanie C song to hit the US radio stations and clubs. There had been several promos before...but Americans seemed unwilling to give the Spice Girl a chance. Yet when underground DJ's began to play her song in key cities like Miami and New York the radios began to receive phone calls requesting "I Turn To You". Yet, no one knew who the singer was. Virgin released the single in April 2001, almost nine months after the UK single had been released and about four months after it topped the USA Billboard Club Music Chart. Following the success of "I Turn To You" Melanie C's last single was "If That Were Me". The single was never released in the USA, but it raised funds for specific charities intended to help the homeless. Fans await the release of Melanie C's follow up album. "Northern Star" has been far successful worldwide. With the release of her follow up album, Mel hopes to win the American hearts over.
